NSW: Costa proposed new laws to crack down on ATM fraud
NSW Police Minister MICHAEL COSTA is proposing new laws to crack down on thieves whoexploit credit card technology to steal from Automated Teller Machines (ATMs).
Mr COSTA says criminals are using credit card scanning technology to copy key cardinformation from people using ATMs.
Thieves used so-called skimming devices to duplicate ATM cards and steal more than$100,000 from at least 100 St George Bank customers in Sydney last November.
Mr COSTA says criminals are also using purpose-built machines hidden inside ATMs tocarry out the scams.
He says the law must keep pace with technology.
The law he says he'll introduce as soon as possible will make it illegal to manufacture, repair, traffic or possess any device adapted for use in connection with forging or falsifyingcredit cards.
Unlawfully possessing, using or trafficking in credit card data would also be an offence, with jail sentences of up to 10 years for such offences.
