Fed: Howard says Kosovars must go

Prime Minister JOHN HOWARD says although deporting Kosovo refugees from Australia is
distressing, it's something that has to be done.

Speaking on Melbourne radio 3AW, he says he's very conscious of the emotion of the
situation, having been amongst those who greeted the first contingent of refugees who
arrived in Australia last year.

But he says they came here on a certain basis and that basis has to be adhered to.

A number of Kosovo Albanians, who've been staying in Australia because of the Balkans
crisis, are in the High Court, fighting to prevent refugees being sent home tomorrow.

They claim their lives will be in danger if they return to their still-unstable homeland.

But the government says its decision is final.
