VIC:Jail for violent vigilantes
MELBOURNE, Aug 27 AAP - Two vigilantes have been jailed for brutally bashing a Melbourne
man they were told had broken into a car.
Harold Noyaux was punched, kicked and stomped on by Amrula Deniz Taskiran and Joseph
Nabalarua, who said they wanted to teach him a lesson.
He was also bashed with a tyre wrench and bottle during the attack in September 2009,
the Victorian County Court heard on Friday.
Taskiran, 20, had begun chasing Mr Noyaux after receiving a call from his mother that
he was breaking into a car.
During the chase he was joined by Nabalarua, 20, whom he did not know.
Taskiran left the scene twice while Mr Noyaux was lying injured on the ground and returned,
including once with his mother, to continue the bashing.
At one point Mr Noyaux was grabbed by the legs and dragged into the bushes.
This caused him to hit his head, which knocked him out.
The attack has left Mr Noyaux with what the court was told is an acquired brain injury
and requiring constant supervision.
Taskiran and Nabalarua pleaded guilty to intentionally causing serious injury.
Jailing the pair, Judge Pamela Jenkins said the attack was "cowardly" and extremely violent.
"The attack was callous and brutal in the extreme," she said.
Judge Jenkins jailed Taskiran, of Narre Warren, for eight years and six months with
a non-parole period of six years and six months.
She ordered Nabalarua, of Hallam, be imprisoned for seven years with a minimum of five years.
