NSW: Public school system healthy: Tebbutt
New South Wales Education Minister CARMEL TEBBUTT rejects claims that the public school
system is in crisis.
A report from the Public Education Council has found the system is troubled by falling
enrolments, a lack of money and a lack of community confidence.
It's also found the government system of funding private schools has compromised its
legal obligation to provide a high standard of public education.
But Ms TEBBUTT says there are no plans to reduce the subsidy for poorer private schools.
She says over 90 per cent of government funding goes to public schools and New South
Wales spends more than the national average on each student.
Mr TEBBUTT says the government rejects any suggestion that public schooling is in crisis.
